Family of 3 seeking Interlaken/Jungfrau area advice: Best base town for Airbnbs with a 4-year-old?

Hello everyone!

My spouse, our 4-year-old child, and I are planning a trip to the Jungfrau region. We will be flying into Geneva Airport and taking the train into Interlaken. Because hotels in the area are quite expensive, we are looking into Airbnb/apartment options instead.

Can anyone recommend the ideal town to base ourselves in? Our main priorities are easy access to supermarkets and family-friendly restaurants, as well as smooth transit to Grindelwald and Jungfraujoch. If anyone could also suggest a manageable itinerary tailored for a toddler, we would highly appreciate it!

When is this trip-2026 or 2027? Pickings will be pretty slim for 2026.
Switzerland is expensive, and the exchange rate does not favor the USD.
There have been a number of great posts here for children's activities, and Swiss playgrounds are great. Wengen or Murren are the favorite bases discussed here. Just do a Search on the Forum.
Have a great family trip.

We stayed at Hotel Alpina in Murren. Charming town and affordable hotel (compared to others). We had a corner room with amazing views. Your dates are missing, so that may be an issue?
When you say "supermarkets' there are none. But there is a great little store that has everything.

There is a Coop in Murren, where we purchased hot good- and wine! I'm sure Wengen has a Coop, I just haven't been to the latter.

There are grocery stores in all the villages & towns - Murren, Wengen, Grindelwald, Wilderswil, Interlaken, etc.

If your priority is Grindelwald & Jungfraujoch, then stay in Grindelwald but make sure you're within walking distance to one of the train stations to avoid having to do bus connections.

Thank you all for your response. My travel date is in August 2026. I’m unsure which area to choose as a base—Interlaken, Grindelwald, Wengen, Murren, or Gimmelwald. Will go through the articles and pick which suits my budget.

how long will you be in the Berner Oberland area?

In addition to the Jungfraujoch, do you have any other priorities?

Will you do anything on the way from Geneva or go straight through? (chocolate tour, cheese in Gruyére??)

It is fairly straightforward to travel between al the different villages in the area, so I would concentrate in price and availability of accommodation first. Then plan around that.

WengenK is right on. Get on AirBnB, set the map to cover the whole area and see what is available for your dates that suits your needs and budget. You might not have a lot of choices at this late date.

Interlaken is a commercial transit center, so no charm. Gimmelwald is charming, but tiny, not even a grocery store, so not a great base. So that leaves you three areas for lodging. Good luck!
