Family in Lautaubrunnen - which pass

We are arriving by car and staying for 6 nights camping. Plan on not using car once we arrive. Plan on simple picking and seining major sights in local area. We are a family of 2 adults and a 12 and 14 year old, Which rail pass will be best?

Are you camping at the Steckelberg end of the valley or near Lauterbrunnen? Does your campsite provide bicycles?

You can see ticket prices around the region. Fares to the highest mountain peaks are respectively high. The smallest investment is a One-Month Half Fare Card for visitors at about $125 per adult and you can request the free Swiss Family Card to cover the kids. The Berner Oberland pass (see link on same page) for 6 consecutive days costs 300 SF per adult and you'd pay 30 SF per child for the Junior Card.

Either the Family Card or the Junior Card is the only ticket the kids need when they travel with you, regardless of whether you're using a transport option that's fully covered by your pass or you're buying a discounted ticket.

When I first read your post, I thought I was reading something I wrote! We just got back, and stayed with our 12 and 14 yr old at Camping Jungfrau. The people in the office of Camping Jungfrau are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable of the Swiss train and transportation systems. I highly recommend you speak with them first, they can give you prices, and they can sell the tickets right there, and no extra charges. Tickets for trips like Lauterbrunnen to Wengen, or up to Grutschalp, are for a day, not a specific time, so you can safely buy in the morning of the day you want to go and leave whenever on that day.

As for a rail pass - we looked it over and it was not enough travel for us to warrant buying any passes. We went Lauterbrunnen to Wengen, and Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg, and back. Another day, we went Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp, walked to Murren, then cable car from Murren to Gimmelwald, hiking from Gimmelwald back to Camping.
Each trip segment was in the $20 to $30 range one way. So we spent well under $150 for all 4 of us for basically two days of train usage.

While we were there, both Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn peaks were completely clouded over and so we didn't spend the money to go to either. Keep in mind that both of those segments are not completely covered with a train pass, but you will get half-off I think.

I think if you spend 10-15 minutes talking with the Camping Jungfrau staff at their check-in/information desk, you'll be able to make your decision. Have a great time! Camping Jungfrau is a beautiful place, and in a great location.

Thank you for your reply - I am literally sitting here working out costs at the moment! Did you go up to First ,Grindelwald and do First Flyer /Trotti bikes? It all seems to expensive. We leave on sunday driving down through France- any other suggestions for our girls?

Thank you very much.

The great thing with your scenario is that your kids travel absolutely free EVERYWHERE in Switzerland as long as you get the free Swiss Family Card. There's no better deal than them traveling free...and that even includes places like the super expensive Jungfrau and Schilthorn and all of the other places you mentioned like First. If you purchase a half fare card (along with the free Swiss Family Card) you only pay 1/2 price everywhere for 2 people even though 4 people will be traveling.
