Fall Recommendations?

We're taking the Rick Steves Best of Switzerland tour in early September. We want to spend an extra week in Switzerland after the tour, and are looking for ideas for places to go. We're seeking great destinations that are not on the tour, or places on the tour where we might want to return for an extra day or two. For example, we want to do some hiking around Zermatt, so we'll return there and hope for good weather. We're focused mainly on outdoor activities like viewing scenery and fairly easy hiking.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and tips!

Really, it is so hard because everywhere is pretty awesome. If flying out of Geneva, I'd consider Zermatt then back to Lake Geneva--Vevey vineyards should be nice at that time of year, head over to Gruyere, lots of hiking opportunities around the lake.
If flying out of Zurich, then the Bernese Oberland and Lucerne would be my choice. You never get more than two nights anywhere, so really anywhere will be fine!
