Before hubby and I take off for Switzerland next week I was wondering if anyone has visited the textile town of St. Gallen. I love to sew and I use a batiste called "swiss batiste" that is a beautiful fabric used for children's clothing and baptism gowns. I was thinking that I might could find some of it in Switzerland while there. I have researched and found a factory store in St. Gallens that seems to sell some fabric but I cannot tell what type. I would also love to find some lace. Anyone had any luck doing so? Thanks so much for the help!
The word for fabric store in German is "Stoffgeschäft". I no longer live in Switzerland (i moved back to the states about a year ago), but i know sewing is still pretty popular in Switzerland so you'll still find a good number of them out there - they're small but generally well stocked. If you're in Luzern, there is good sized one in the Altstadt close to the Kapellplatz - the owner speaks excellent English and will be able to help you out. I don't know the address, but its a two story store on a corner - you'll see if if you poke around. Zurich has many of them and St Gallen is a good sized city by Swiss standards so you should have good luck there, but no need to travel there specifically for what you're looking for. Just look for Stoffgeschäft at local.ch (that's basically the Swiss yellow pages) and you'll be well on your way.
