American here. Our family just finished our first trip to Lucerne. Beautiful little city.

I would pick Stanserhorn and Pilatus over Rigi. Everyone rants and raves on here about Rigi, and perhaps that’s the problem. It was SO crowded. Imagine standing in line at Disney World for 2 hours to ride the big rollercoaster. That’s Rigi.

The beautiful boat ride to Vitznau? Yes, but you don’t see anything because it was literally filled to the brim with tourists, obnoxious high schoolers on class trips messing around and grabbing each other’s genitalia (not joking or exaggerating). It was an absolutely miserable time.

Meanwhile - our day up to Pilatus made me want to sell my house in Chicago and move to Switzerland.

And just a plain 2-3 hour lunch cruise on the lake is a good way to enjoy the views. Boats on the shore just left of the river mouth.
