I am traveling to Switzerland for the first time to visit a friend. Zurich, Geneva and Montreux. Will merchants accept euros, or should I get some swiss francs?

You should get CHF and not Euros.
But you will find that you really don't need any as even the toilets at trains stations in Zurich and Montreux have tap to pay and don't take coins.

I'm of the always have some cash in your pocket school. Worst case, you don't use it and you spend it on your last day.
Don't mess with euros, get CHF francs which aren't that hard to find beforehand in larger US cities. Or get a fee free ATM card and put your money into that account.

Thank you!! I am also one who likes to have some cash....old school I guess. I'll get a small amount of Swiss francs.
