EuroAirport: Freiburg and Basel

Hello! I'm in the very tentative early stages of planning a potential trip. Nothing is booked yet. At the moment the outline is:

  • Fly into EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, take the bus to Basel main train station, and take the fast train up to Freiburg
  • Spend three nights in Freiburg
  • Take the train back down to Basel
  • Spend two nights in Basel
  • Fly back out of EuroAirport on a very early flight

I have a few questions:

  1. On a basic level, does this seem like a sensible itinerary? Is there anything I'm missing that would render this "seriously not a good idea"?
  2. I'm a little bit confused about EuroAirport and how it works - I understand the idea of an airport that's jointly controlled by two countries, and so you have to choose whether you arrive through French customs and passport checks or Swiss. What's not clear to me is things like if you exited through the French side, is it still possible for you to take the frequent airport bus into Basel, or are you then "locked" in French territory and so you can't transit through Switzerland to get to Germany? Do you have to specify when buying a plane ticket which country you intend to officially "land" in? When flying back home, does it matter whether you "exit" out of the French or Swiss side, and does it have to be the same one you "entered" through? Basically any clarification on exactly how EuroAirport works would be greatly appreciated!
  3. And connected to that: what's the best way of getting from EuroAirport to Freiburg? There seems to be a few different options, some of which seem to be quite specific to "only the Swiss side" or "only the French side". I much prefer trains to buses, hence why my tentative plan is the bus to Basel then the train to Freiburg, rather than a bus the whole way, but if anyone has good information on the options here that would be fantastic.
  4. I have been in and out of the EU several times and am quite used to passing through Schengen passport controls and customs etc as a UK passport holder. However, is there anything different I would need to know about entering through Swiss passport controls? Are they stricter about anything or is the whole process basically the same as flying into the EU? And connected to that, are there passport checks on the train journey between Freiburg and Basel, or not because they're both in Schengen countries?
  5. Finally, a different type of question: if you were doing this trip, would you prefer 3 nights in Freiburg and 2 in Basel, or vice versa? I'm interested in seeing both, and I enjoy beautiful inner cities, pretty old churches, nice pedestrian areas for strolling, exploring the public transport, interesting museums, that kind of thing. I'll happily take a cable car up a mountain for a view but I'm not into "nature holidays" that are all about hiking and whatnot.

Thank you in advance for answers to any of these! I know it's a lot of questions; any advice or insider knowledge is much appreciated.

If you come from outside the Schengen area you will first encounter passport control. That will be done by the French. You then collect your luggage and then walk either through French or Swiss customs.

Once through customs you are in the arrival area of either the French or the Swiss sector, but you can move between them, passing through customs again... So don't worry. It is not something you have to commit to in advance.

From the airport to Freiburg you can indeed take a bus. See the Airport's website for more info on that.

On the Swiss - German, and Swiss - French borders there is normally no passport control. You will probably see some customs officers though, and there may be border police doing identity controls.

I'm making a wild guess that you're using a bargain airline of some kind to fly direct to EuroAirport. So I'd want to make sure I knew all the fees they might charge. At least it seems impossible that they're using an inconvenient "secondary" airport! I haven't been to EAP.

I liked my day in Freiburg fine, but there is more to do in Basel than in Freiburg, especially art. I had a car, so it was easy to visit the Vitra Design Museum and Augusta Raurica. I don't think Freiburg participates in the BF KONUS free transportation card. Month and Year? Are you going to hike/amble in the BF? Specific BF targets?

it is true that Freiburg im Breisgau does not participate in issuing the KONUS Card, although it is valid on transport there.

I too wonder how you will fly into such a minor airport. Will you be making a connection somewhere else in Europe to fly into the Euroairport? If so you will likely have border control there and customs at Euroairport as you leave the airport into France or Switzerland.

It isn't hard to get from the airport to the main SBB train station - the bus terminal is across the square from the SBB station. If you decide that the ICE won't work for you there are frequent regional DB trains from Basel Bad Bahnhof a tram ride away to Freiburg im Breisgau.

would you prefer 3 nights in Freiburg and 2 in Basel, or vice versa?

I like them both very much and would find that decision for you difficult for me.

They are quite different and maybe if you listed what you wanted to do in each it would help you decide.

Hi everyone, thank you for your comments! Yes, I would be flying via a budget airline (that I've had good experiences with before) directly from the UK - EuroAirport doesn't seem to have transatlantic flights but it has plenty of UK ones.

I haven't put much specific thought into exactly what I'd like to be doing in Freiburg/Basel yet as I'm very early on in planning and nothing is confirmed yet - the cable car in Freiburg definitely appeals, as do maybe some of the museums in Basel, but I'm yet to do the usual intense "itinerary planning deep dive" I do before my trips. Ambience is a big thing for me; I know I really enjoy just walking around a pretty place and exploring. I have the sense that central Freiburg has a better "old-town ambience" than Basel does but I might be totally wrong on that! And I'm definitely more interested in Freiburg as a nice little town than I am in the Black Forest more generally; I don't think there are any excursions from Freiburg that I'd be particularly interested in doing (but if anyone has any suggestions for must-see things in the area then let me know :) ).

I would definitely be there without a car, and currently the month I'm looking at is September 2024.

IF you have the time, do visit the little town of Staufen, about 20 minutes by train from Freiburg. Cute small town with castle ruins and cafes. Schnapps outlet!
