Eurail Austria Switzerland pass and St Moritz options

I am looking at getting the 5 day Austria & Switzerland Pass as I will travelling from Vienna to Zermatt on Sunday October 7, Day in Zermatt Monday, Zermatt to St Moritz Tuesday (Glacier Express), St Moritz to Zurich Wednesday, Zurich to Lucerne/ Mt Titlus and back to Zurich Thursday and fly out.

Looking at options on Wednesday for St Moritz. Is catching Bernina Express worth it (St Moritz to Lugano and return to Chur?) or direct to Chur for afternoon or just stay in St Moritz and surrounds for the morning and head to Zurich in mid afternoon.

Will the pass give me travel in and around St Moritz, Zermatt and Luzern?

If you mean local travel on city buses, that should be covered by a hotel card you get at the hotel you are staying at. It does not include things like the Gornergratbahn or mountain lifts in Zermatt, mountain lifts in St Moritz or Luzern.

I don't think that is possible in one day, and I don't think the Eurail Pass helps on the Swiss Post Buses, but I could be wrong. Never used a Eurail Pass. You could just do a round trip to Tirano, one way using the Bernina Express with panorama cars requiring a reservation fee, and return on a regular train without a reservation fee.

Or you might just can the idea of getting a Eurail Pass. Looks like you could get a discount nonrefundable ticket from Vienna to Zermatt for 79 EUR. It is a 12 hour journey. Then use either a Swiss Travel Pass or Half fare card (120 CHF) for the rest of the time in Switzerland. That will cover you pretty well, although the STP still only gives discounts for those mountain lifts.

Vienna to Zermatt on Sunday October 7, Day in Zermatt Monday, Zermatt
to St Moritz Tuesday (Glacier Express), St Moritz to Zurich Wednesday,
Zurich to Lucerne/ Mt Titlus and back to Zurich Thursday and fly out.

Vienna is far away from everything, and that's a lot of back-and-forth travel: 12h west to Zermatt (through Hallstatt, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Zurich, St Moritz), 10h back east to St Moritz on Glacier Express, 4h back west to Zurich, and 2h back-and-forth to Luzern.

A more direct route would be 10h west to St Moritz (or 9h to Davos), 10 hr west to Zermatt on Glacier Express, 5 hr east to Luzern through Interlaken (rather than back through Zurich again), and 1 hr to Zurich.

Even that passes many places worth stops of their own like Hallstatt, Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Interlaken/Berner Oberland (Rick's favorite area). Since you're starting so far east, focusing on the Austrian Alps and eastern Switzerland might be the most efficient.

It sounds like the goal is to ride Swiss scenic trains to focusing on the Austrian Alps will not work.

For your trip, a Swiss Pass is a better option than a 2-country Eurail Pass. The Eurail, passes do not work as well in Switzerland as a Swiss Pass does ( meaning it does not provide as much coverage).* You can buy a ticket from Vienna to Zurich on OeBB for 39 € if you purchase 3 months in advance. Then use the Swiss Pass to cover the journey to Zermatt.

If you wish to stick with the plan outlined, you could cover all with a 4-day Flex pass (Swiss Pass). like this:

Day 1, Vienna to Zurich ( first day on the Swiss Pass)

Day 2 stay in Zermatt

Day 3 Glacier Express to St. Moritz ( day 2 on the Swiss Pass)

Day 4 to Luzern, Mt. Titlis, etc.

Day 5 to Zurich for flight home

However, this is not the best use of a pass ( Luzern to Zurich is inexpensive and no need to cover it with a pass day). And it does not get you on the Bernina Express. You could drop the layover day in Zermatt and spend two nights in St. Moritz instead, using the day there for an out-and -back on the Bernina Express. Or, spend one night in St. Moritz and take the Bernina Express the full route to Lugano and spend the night there. Then head to Luzern--several routes are possible, including lake boats part of the way. These plans would have you using the Swiss Pass four consecutive days and paying for the trip to Zurich on Day 5.

It is also possible to work out a better route as Robert suggests, as heading to Zermatt First has you going all the way West and working your way back. Depending what time your flight departs from Zurich, you may be able to travel from Zermatt to Zurich on .day 5. That journey is 3h 21 minutes and the first train departs Zermatt at 6:37, with arrival at the airport shortly after 10.

  • For example, according to this website, you will pay an extra $61 to ride the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz with a 2-country Eurail Pass.
