Eurail and/or SwissRail Pass?

We are traveling for 6 weeks, hiking our way through the Alps all over Europe. We already have our Eurail Pass but am wondering if the Swiss Rail would also be a benefit for 8 days in Switzerland for small trains trams etc.? Any suggestions for the Lauterbrunnen area also welcome. And advice regarding Glacier Express. Also we have 4 days in Ljubljana and 5 days in Dubrovnik...

You already spent the big bucks on the Eurail Pass, why get another as you will get a 25 pct discount with it in the Berner Oberland. Or does it have a limited number of days?

Yes it has a limit of 10 days We are traveling from Italy to Switzerland, Switz through Austria to Slovenia and Slovenia to Croatia over the course of 6 weeks, The train is mainly for getting from one point to another. we start in Venice and take the train to Dobbiaco. We have 12 days hiking in the DOlomites, then travel to Switz. 6 days in lauterbrunnen, train to to Slovenia via Austria 2 days worth, 5 days in Ljubljana, travel to Split,7 day boat trip, go to Dubrovnik for 5 days... and then we will be hiking from. So perhaps it would be good to get the Swiss Pass for our 6 days in Switzerland for all the little trams and cablecars etc? or does the Eurail cover these?? this is our first trip like this so we are learning as we go..

Sarah,

If you will be in the lauterbrunnen area for at least 4 days then I would recommend the regional pass. You're Eurail pass only covers you as far as Interlaken, after that it gives you a discount. If you buy the regional pass you can use it, and it won't cost you any of your travel days on your Eurail pass while in the lauterbrunnen valley. You also can use your Eurail pass to get a discount on the regional pass as long as the Eurail pass includes Switzerland.

See the Switzerland blow-up section on the Eurail pass coverage map. Solid lines are fully covered during your counted travel days. The Glacier Express is a fully covered line, but requires a paid seat reservation if you want the through train with the panorama cars. Dotted lines are just discounted and do not require using one of your counted Eurail flexi pass travel days. That includes a 25% ticket discount around the Lauterbrunnen Valley when you head south/uphill from Interlaken.

I would not usually recommend an overlapping pass. See some pass comparisons and links on our Swiss rail page. See more local ticket prices are at https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/ or in Rick's guidebook covering the region. Staff at a ticket office in Interlaken could also advise you.

Just got back from Interlaken Ost train station (gateway to Lauterbrunnen), and there's a big sign on the Interlaken Platform "Eurail Not Valid".

You'll get the biggest bang for your buck in Switzerland with a Swiss Half Fare Card.

Your pass will essentially be worthless in Croatia.
