Early may, high country village selection.

We are planning a few days in Switzerland, may 6-9th and are wondering if it would be a waste of time to plan a stay at gimmelwald during that time. Or if someone could suggest another option.
Might be our only opportunity to ever see switzerland. And would like to experience that alpine \ historic charm.
Thanks

Gimmelwald is VERY tiny, too tiny for me for 3 nights. Pick Lauterbrunnen or Muerren as an alternative. If you are in Lauterbrunnen you have choices depending on weather: Go to the mountains on either side of the valley (including Muerren), go to Interlaken and cruise on one of the lakes, see the waterfalls in the valley, etc.

You may not have any high altitude lodging options at all at that time of year. Almost all of the hotels close for the shoulder season, and for good reason. What remains of the snow pack is not suitable for skiing, hiking trails are either too muddy or still covered in snow, weather is very frequently overcast (meaning those stunning Alpine views you counted on are hidden behind the clouds) and rainy. And the farmers use this period to fertilize the pastures. How do you like the smell of liquified manure?

I would suggest you spend your valuable vacation time and money somewhere else at that time of year.

Have never been quite that early before...only as early as late May. However, even www.booking.com (which doesn't contain many of the hotels in Murren) shows the Hotel Alpenruh being available then. I would also contact Denise at the Chalet Fontana and ask for a room.
