Early June Favorite Sights Open Berner Oberland

Hello Switzerland Experts! Thank you for all your feedback thus far and while yes we do wish we could push this trip back some we will be in Switzerland early June. Due to this we will obviously be missing some things that won't be open yet but we are happy to visit and will come back at another time when more will be open. We will be in Wengen for 5 nights June 4-9 and are thinking we will for sure visit Schilthorn, walk between Murren and Gimmelwald, spend an afternoon exploring Lauterbrunnen, and possibly take a boat ride on lake Brienz. We have ruled out the Jungfraujoch for now just because it looks so busy. I also get that same vibe from Grindelwald First although my husband loves the look of those mountain carts! Any other lower elevation ideas for this shoulder season we will find ourselves in? If you traveled the time of year what were some things you enjoyed? I would love your feedback!

After our time in Wengen we will be heading to Luzern for a few days. Looking forward to our trip!

IslandFam,
How exciting! We stayed in Wengen last year with the RS Alpine tour. BEAUTIFUL! We visited Murren and walked to Gimmelwald. Take swiss francs along that little trail as the little ladies making hand sewn items for sale don't accept anything else.
We're staying in Murren this year and hope to visit Gimmelwald once again. I think your plan looks wonderful! Wengen is a magnificent spot to reach Mannlichen and we hope to go there this summer.

Wanderweg-We do enjoy hiking. I would say more moderate to easy hikes this trip. We have done strenuous in the past but my husband has a hernia that the doctors don’t want to repair yet. This his 50th birthday trip and as you can imagine he is more than annoyed and thinks he can do “all things” but I am sort of quietly monitoring how strenuous things might be. We do prefer loops or open jaw hikes rather than out and backs and will just take our time. I do have the Walking In Switzerland’s Berner Oberland book which has many suggestions. If you have any suggestions or must dos that would be possible that time of year let us know.

Since it’s unlikely that the hike from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg will be open in early June, I’d do this for a fun and beautiful day…

Wengen > Mannlichen > Cable car down the other side to Grindelwald Terminal > Eiger Express to Eigergletscher (beautiful ride) > hike or train down to Kleine Scheidegg (stop at Fallbodensee along the way if you’re hiking) > easy hike/walk to Wengernalp > catch the train from there back to Wengen

This would be a combo of scenic cable cars/trains + easy/moderate downhill walking/hiking.

A nice way to combine Mürren/Schilthorn/Gimmelwald….

Wengen > Lauterbrunnen > cable car to Grutschalp > train to Winteregg > optional easy walk to Mürren (or continue on train) > Mürren to Schilthorn/Birg > Mürren > optional funicular up to Allmendhubel for a lovely lunch spot > back down to Mürren via funicular or Blumental Flower Trail > easy walk down to Gimmelwald > Cable car to Stechelberg > walk or bus to Lauterbrunnen > Wengen

Thanks wanderweg! I am working on a spreadsheet still trying to figure out which pass to get and I am still leaning towards the half fare card and the Berner Oberland Pass option over the Jungfrau pass but the verdict is not completed yet! lol So much really depends on weather. I really appreciate your suggestions. They both look like a great days out!

It really depends on what your plans are. If you're focusing on the Jungfrau Region (Grindelwald/Wengen/Murren/Lauterbrunnen/Lake Thun/Brienz) than typically the Jungfrau Travel Pass is better these days because it includes Kleine Scheidegg/Eiger Express/Schynige Platte/First, but if you have plans to go further out to places like Oeschinensee, Bern, Thun, Montreux (Golden Pass Express), etc. then the BO pass makes more sense. The benefit of the BO pass including Schilthorn rarely outweighs things in a Jungfrau focused itinerary, but of course these are generalizations and only the math tells you for sure :)

Wanderweg - At the moment both passes are neck and neck! Depends on the day and what we think we will be doing while in Wengen. We will be staying in Bern for one night upon arrival and will also be heading to Lucerne which is why the BO pass had interested me. It is really a toss up at this point. I do plan on the Half Fare Card for sure.
