So, is this humble piece of paper with the QR code which I printed out here on my computer the thing that I should take on the train and show the conductor (along with my passport)? I don't have to exchange it for a plastic card, or something? I have seat reservations on Golden Pass printed on the same everyday paper. It seems too informal!
Not dumb. That's all you need. We did have our tickets and passports checked a few times on the Swiss trains. For safety and convenience, when on the trains, I just kept those items in a money belt. Have fun!!
Yes, that humble piece of paper printed from a PDF file with the QR code is your pass.
Self-print tickets and passes are common for train tickets. When the ticket inspector comes round on the train (you can tell it is him/her as everybody else gets out there tickets), just hold out your piece of paper and he will scan the QR code. Usually doesn't bother to ask for a passport.
Simple, fast, efficient.
Just in case you loose it, tear it or drop it from a mountain, print out two copies and keep one safe in your case.
No need for a money belt.
Chris, I was carrying the Swiss Passes and passports for three people. I wasn't nervous about losing any of it. It was just more convenient than digging for it. There wasn't a moment anywhere in Switzerland in which I was the least bit nervous.
