Driving in Ticino?

We are planning to do most of our trip to Switzerland by train but have 4 days based in Ascona and wondering if we should rent a car for our time in Ticino and to get to/from there. Would love some advice!

Family of 4. Two adults, two teenagers. We always rent a car in Europe, and my husband is looking forward to doing some mountain driving. In Ticino, we plan to visit a variety of places including small towns and outdoor activities (e.g., Bellinzona, Verzaska Valley, Lavertezzo, Morcote, Foroglio, Calnegia, Domodossola, Monte Tamaro).

I was thinking that the flexibility of a car would be worth it, but would love to hear thoughts from those who have visited the area before! Thanks in advance!

One thing to be aware of: In Ticino you get the Ticino ticket included in your accommodation and as a result will have free use of all public transport in the Canton.

For some of the remote mountain areas having a car would be a good idea. But to get to for example Domodossola I would take the Centovalli train, and for the places around Lugano I would also look in to just doing it by public transit. That way you can also more easily include a boat trip in your plans.
