We will be driving this route in September. Have already discussed the fact that we love to drive and are not taking the train....I know they are great but we like the spontaneity of car travel. So.....has anyone on this forum driven this route before? Just interested in any tips as these forums are so helpful.
Thank you!
Hi Jane. It will be a fun drive; I'm jealous. :) You have several options - first, to get around Lake Como you can drive north or south, or you could take a ferry to Mennagio and drive west to Lugano from there. That would be most interesting, unless the ferry timing doesn't line up well. Most of the way north from Italy thru Swiss is freeway. You also have an option to take a slower road thru mtns in Switzerland, or stay on main / faster road. Enjoy your trip!
Thank you Bob! I will study my map and check out your suggestions!
We did this route but flip flopped. Drove from Lauterbrunnen to Varenna. It was AWESOME!!! We went over this crazy pass to Lugano and took the ferry from Menaggio. Worked like a charm. You will love it. Actually it was the same time of year- September. It had snowed that night so the pass we were going to go over closed so we had to go on a lower one- either way we ended up in Menaggio. Have a blast!
