Driving around Switzerland

We will be renting a car in Munich, and doing a round trip through Switzerland before returning the car in Munich. We will be entering Switzerland from the northeast around the east end of Lake Constance, then leaving via Liechtenstein and Austria. Would anyone like to provide advice on required vignettes for both Switzerland and Austrian travel? Do we need to purchase them asap as we cross the borders, or do we have a few km grace?

Thanks so much!

I have not entered the way your are coming in, but have driven through Austria and Switzerland multiple times. Stop BEFORE the border to get your vignette. You will start seeing signs as you get close. I know you can buy the Austrian vignette in Liechtenstein (at least we did in 2008) I have heard of people being stopped and fined just after they crossed the border. Some have said the police are watching for people without the vignette. We once forgot to buy the Swiss sticker and made it about an hour in before we remembered. We exited the freeway immediately and found a gas station to buy it at. We got lucky...I absolutely do not recommend doing that. I have purchased vignettes in Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia, etc. There has always been a way to get it either before entering the country or right at the border.
