drive from basal to wilderswil(interlaken)

I will be driving from Basal to Wilderswil the morning of Sunday July 20th after completing a river cruise. We would like a scenic drive along the way and are looking for places to explore. Our check in time isn't until 3:00 so we would like to spend the day sight seeing as much as possible and still arrive in Wilderswil between 3:00-4:00. I would appreciate any suggestions

The direct drive is scenic enough, at least once you leave the southern edge of the Swiss Jura and you see the Alps in the distance. Consider stopping in Bern or Thun.

I agree with Tom, the drive is definitely scenic and you won't be disappointed. I particularly love the view of the Alps as you approach them, it is amazing how quickly they appear in front of you. That being said, we enjoy scenic drives and in your shoes I might consider taking the longer route through Lucerne instead of going past Bern. There are some very pretty views between Lucerne and Wilderswil, particularly as you approach the Brienzersee. We had some extra time on our first drive into the Berner Oberland and took the smaller road through the little towns along the north of the Brienzersee, instead of main road (with lots of tunnels obscuring the view) along the south side of the lake.

If you are really feeling adventurous and want a longer drive, you could go further (approximately an extra hour) out of your way and instead of heading straight south towards Wilderswil from Lucerne, turn East towards Stans and Altdorf just south of Lucerne. Follow this route until you reach Wassen, and then turn West towards the Brienzersee and eventually Wilderswil. The drive between Wassen and and the Brienzersee goes over the Sustenpass, which may not be one of Switzerland's famous high passes but is still very impressive. We took this route last fall and were blown away, even with the mountains being pretty well shrouded in clouds. I wouldn't recommend this route if the clouds are in tight, though.

I hope this helps and have a great trip. This is one of our favourite places to visit.

Thank you for your responses. Chris, I really appreciate your advice. We do have the extra time so I think we will definitely go a little out of the way for the views. Its great to hear from someone who has taken this route. Thanks again

Looks like you have some good advice. I've never been disappointed by Swiss scenery, even before reaching the mountains. Happy driving!
