Don't underestimate Spiez

Just returned from our trip to Switzerland, which was wonderful and made better by the helpful information here.

I asked a question about vineyards near Lauterbrunnen, and a couple of people mentioned Spiez. Otherwise, I don't remember seeing much information about Spiez here in the forum.

We took a day trip to Spiez via the boat at Interlaken and had a great day. We absolutely loved Spiez and several of our group wished that we had spent more time in that beautiful town.

So when planning your trip to this area, take in to consideration Spiez. There are vineyards, there is an awesome castle with interactive displays, there are lovely restaurants on the waterfront, and a very beautiful location.

I agree! We stumbled into Spiez on our first trip to Switzerland in 2014 having a 3 hour wait for our train connecting to Milano and we have been back many times since.

Yes, the ride on the train or the boat to Spiez is covered by the Berner Oberland Pass or the Swiss Travel Pass. Admission to the castle was also covered under the Swiss Travel Pass, but not the B. O. Pass.

I thought the interior of the castle was a little odd. I was there in Sept. 2021, and I remember some ghosts made out of sheets. Reminded me of an old Halloween costume my mom had made. 😊

We arrived by boat and departed by train. It is a long uphill walk from the lake to the train station. Or it just seemed long because it was a hot day.

There are some nice videos of spiez on you tube for anyone who is interested in checking it out. I haven’t watched any since before my 2021 trip, so I don’t have any specific recommendations, but here are a couple:

Very nice photos. And no people. That’s how I like my pictures too. 😊

Beejay, the transport to Spiez is covered by the BO Pass whether by train or boat.

Note that the station in Spiez is quite a bit uphill from the waterfront. But for normal fit people doable. There is an infrequent bus service but that is mostly intended to allow people with mobility issues to get to the boats.

Spiez is indeed nice. I visited the vineyards once, and also did a wine tasting in the castle. The vineyards are actually owned by the burgergemeinde of Bern, the wine is aged in the basement of the castle, and you get it at a few places in Bern...
