My husband and I will be staying two nights only in Murren the 3rd week in August (coming up soon!). I've researched a few interesting restaurants in Murren and in a couple of the other small towns and was wondering if it would be a good idea to try and make dinner reservations ahead? Am I wrong in thinking that the end of August will still be part of the busiest tourist season?
Which restaurants? It doesn’t hurt to have reservations, but you also want them to line up with your day plans. The busiest part of the season in Murren will end around August 25 and then it will slow down pretty significantly. If you’re someone who eats earlier then you typically can get in without a reservation, but if you want to eat at the prime time (7-8) then some of the restaurants may have less tables available.
We are currently in Zermatt having come from Appenzel and Zurich. It’s very warm, low 90’s and high humidity and very crowded. I would have some reservations made unless the local posters think these crowds will be gone in two weeks. The Chinese tourists are back in mass.
Zermatt is very different then Murren
Appenzel and Zurich and Zermatt are all very different, it’s still been very warm, muggy and very crowded in all areas.
When we were in Murren in June 2023, dinner reservations were essential. It was nearly impossible to get in before 9 pm otherwise, especially if you want to have a view or sit outside. Also, even with a reservation be aware that some of the restaurants are connected to hotels and may reserve the best tables for hotel guests (whether or not those tables get used).
We were in Murren for 5 days last September. If you want to eat lunch or dinner at a reasonable time you will want to make reservations. Most of the restaurants are small, and the popular ones you may need you to reserve a couple of days in advance. Recommend the Eiger Stubli at the Hotel Eiger, just across from the train station, and Stagerstubli. The Drei Berge Hotel's restaurant was not great. Have a wonderful time!
