destination ideas after train through Switzerland

I am a mid 50's girl going solo on a two week train trip through Switzerland in late May. Any suggestions of where else should I visit at the end of the trip? As I have taken the long plane ride I might as well take advantage of it.

Thanks.

Do you have the train trip planned? Will you spend a night or two between train segments in various towns? Tell us your path/plan and perhaps we can be of more help. Where do you fly in-and-out of?

What is your itinerary? That way we can see what is close to where you will end and make some recommendations...

Thanks for the help. The trip is a road scholar trip beginning in Lucerne, ending in Zurich. The hotel stays are 3 nights and visit the following locations, Lucerne, Interlaken, Bern, Jungfrau Region, Zweisimmen, Montreux, Brig, Zermatt, Centovalli, Bellinzona, Verzasca Valley, spiral tunnels, Poschiavo, Zurich. The last day is independent in Zurich departing the next morning.

Thanks.

If you wish to stay in Switzerland, three areas I'd recommend are the Ticino, the Italian section (maybe base in Lugano); the area around Appenzell; and the Graubenden to the SE.

But you may be ready for something other than beautiful scenery by the end of your tour, in which case I'd strongly consider northern Italy. Easy to get to. Venice, Vicenza, Padua, Verona and the lakes would occupy you for two weeks or longer.

Edited to add: You could also go a little farther south and base in Bologna, which is a great central point for day-trips to places like Ravenna and Ferrara. I'm assuming that if you had a burning desire to got to Florence and/or Rome on this trip, you would have mentioned it.

You will already have visited Ticino when you visit Centovalli, Bellinzona and Verzasco valley. From Zurich, go to either Germany or Austria. Things will seem dirt cheap there after two weeks in Switzerland. The north shore of the Bodensee is nice (Lindau), or if you want more alps, head east to St Anton am Arlberg and vicinity. Or head west to Alsace in France (Colmar).

Thank you for the great ideas. I have my homework cut out for me. I need to get this figured out this week so I can book the air. I was thinking about going to Germany for the castles and then up to Munich. I would think I could get public transportation to Fussen. I also noticed Italy was handy. So many choices, thanks for the help.

We went from Zurich to Lindau (nice break in train ride 0 and a beautiful small town on Bodensee. then left next morning on train to Munich. Easy travel. We enjoyed Munich and day trips are easy from there.

I would just decide where you would like to see and then determine how long the train or plane is. We flew Aer Lingus on our last 2 European trips and so had to connect thru in Dublin. We were able to add a day in Dublin on return.

Paris, London , Amsterdam, Italy ... just see what is calling your heart. (and how long do you have after your planned trip may impact that decision as well)
