Deciding on where to extend our travel to after our Danube cruise next June.
A few wanted to go to Switzerland and others thought Venice . Which would be
easier to get to after leaving Illmitz Austria and if we decided on Switz. preferences
on Lucerne or Lauterbrunnen Valley? Not sure yet how many days - need to decide destination first.

Choose which ever you really want to visit. Then you can arrange transit there. We loved Grindelwald, good base for exploring the gorgeous Berner Oberland
Venice is wonderful too. But stay away from San Marco for your hotel.

Illmitz itself is not on a train line. Does your cruise offer transport to a train station at St. Andrae am Zicksee, Wallern im Burgenland, or Pamhagen? Service by OBB PostBus doesn't look very direct.
Trains from Wallern to either Venice or Luzern go via Vienna and take 11-13 hours. Lauterbrunnen would be a bit far to travel in one day, e.g. departing Wallern at 9:20 to arrive Lauterbrunnen at 23:20. You could connect to an overnight train from Vienna to either Venice or Zurich or you could fly the same routes.
