Hello
We are planning a family trip ( 12 year old, ny husband and I who are in our 30s and my parents who are in their 60s ) for December next year so 18 mths to plan away. We have 22 nights in Europe 9 of which are dedicated to Switzerland after this we head to Germany and finish in Austria. ( just for an overview of the trip ).
In Switzerland we have from the 11th to the 19th or so. The first 4 nights I am thinking Basel - so we can go to the zoo see Christmas markets do a day trip to Zurich or Colmar and we are also using Basel as a base for Europa park so made the most sense to stay there with the zoo europa park and a possible colmar or strausbourg day trip.
From there we are looking at either Interlaken or surrounding area or Lucern for 5 nights. I am a bit confused which offers a better experience overall ( dates would be 15th december to 20th ) for things to do for the time of year.
Will be wanting non skiing activities ( as we are skiing later in trip ) though would appreciate snow activities ( scenery, hiking or snow shoeing, or possibly sledding and would like mountain scenery restaurants and things to see and do if weather is not the best ).
I'm stuck on whether Interlaken or surrounding areas have enough to do for non skiers in middle of December. Is there many other things to do in the surrounding areas for non skiers in middle of December?
Or whether Lucern would be the better option with more to see and do and still provide mountain scenery or if we would be missing out on this is we stay Lucern.
Last option is it feasible to day trip from Lucern for maybe one day trip to interlaken to go up the Schilthorn?
Will appreciate any advice and help on this from the experts here
