I will be in Zurich in mid-October for 5 days. Anyone have any recommendations for day trips out of Zurich? Suggestions for October Fest locally?

Hi,
- for landscape: Mount Rigi is a great scenic day trip by rail from Zürich. Only for a clear day.
- for cities: Luzern is very close, about 1 hr by train
- for villages: Stein am Rhein is very pretty and also quite close.

Unless there is a reason you are basing in Zurich, I'd base in adorable Luzern. Zurich is just a big city with less of a flavor of Switzerland. Or, I'd consider 3 days in Lauterbrunnen and 2 in Luzern. If you are sure you want to stay in Zurich, day trips I'd recommend are Luzern and Bern. I'd second a day trip up to the summit of Mt. Rigi. It gives you a lovely boat ride and then the cog railroad.

The Rhinefalls near Schaffhausen is doable.
There might be some kinds of local fall festivals around, but Oktoberfest as you know it is strictly a Munich Germany event. And its mostly in September.
