I am planning a European Christmas & New Year's trip for 2022 to visit two of our former exchange students and their families (one in Germany and one in Switzerland). One former student lives in the Zurich area, and we are tentatively planning to spend December 23-26 with her and her family. Preliminary itinerary is:
12/23 -- arrive via train from Nurnberg, meet up with our student and do RS walking tour
12/24 -- during day, do Zurich Christmas Market & other local things. Celebrate Christmas Eve with family in evening.
12/25 -- Day trip to Luzern and Mount Pilatus for a Christmas day fondue lunch on top of Pilatus (I've checked. They are open on Christmas day and have a special gondola & fondue package).
12/26 --?????
12/27 -- depart by train to Tirol/Innsbruck
My question is are there any other realistically doable day trips from Zurich in the winter we should consider knowing we will be returning to Zurich suburbs to sleep? Our student may have suggestions too, but I thought I would ask here too.
Additional details:
-We will probably have a rental car, but are happy to travel by train if that makes more sense.
-Our family is 2 adults, 2 kids (11 and 15), and a grandparent who will be accompanying us, plus our former student who will be 17 and maybe her mom and sister.
-We've done Rheinfall with the kids in 2019 on the way to Colmar from Zurich airport.
