Thinking about staying in Geneva...want to see Gruyere and the Vineyards...is it possible to stay in Geneva and do day trips to each of these areas? We will not have a car...

Sure. Lausanne might be a little more convenient as far as travel time goes.
flying in to Geneva late afternoon...is Lusanne easy to get to from Geneva? I guess my real question is..we dont need a guide to see what we want to see if we are staying Geneva, correct? We do like to use Rick's books and do our own thing..
Public transport will take you nearly everywhere with frequent connections. Rick's advice would be to head over and sleep in Lausanne, 50 minutes by direct regional train from Geneva airport, unless you have things you want to see in Geneva. The vineyard excursion described on p. 269 of Rick's Switzerland book will be easy to do on your own, as is the train to Gruyere.
