I was thinking of taking the train to Schaffhausen from Zurich as I have already been to Stein am Rhein but was now wondering if anyone has taken the boat from Kontanz to Schaffhausen. I can’t seem to find any info on the price etc. Any links would be helpful. Need one day out of Zurich before heading home and I like the idea of somewhere along the Rhine.

Go to www.sbb.ch/en and put in Kontanz to Schaffhausen, then under "advanced search" then "transport type" deselect everything except "ship". Now, when you hit "search for connections", you will see the boat schedule and prices. 49.80 CHF without a Half Fare Card. 4 boats daily.

The trip takes about 3 1/2 hours. Swiss Travel Pass is valid.

If you enjoyed Stein am Rhein you might consider Aarau. I've always wanted to attend the outdoor opera stage in Bregenz, Austria, but it's a longer trip.
