In our coming visit to Switzerland, we will be staying in Muerren for most of our time. I am playing with the idea of taking a day trip to Montreux to enjoy the scenic view via Zweisimmen. If we start from Muerren at about 8:00 a.m., we are expected to arrive in Montreux at around noon. Besides the scenic trip, what else can we expect to enjoy during the three hours that we will probably have in Montreux before we take the 15:44 train back to Muerren again? Or is this a crazy idea? Has anyone done a whirlwind kind of visit to Montreux? I would like to hear your thoughts. Thank you. (By the way, we will have a STP)
Yes, I did that many years ago. It's a long day trip because, obviously, you have to return to Murren that same evening. You're already staying in one of the most beautiful places in the world (Murren) you're not going to see any more dramatic scenery as the one you're already in. If you want to do a day trip then why not Brienz (wood carvers) and board the lake boat in Interlaken to get there. Then continue on to Geissbach Falls and hotel also on Lake Brienz. There's also the beautiful city of Thun with a castle right in the center high on the hill top. It reminded me a bit of Lucerne with its own wooden bridge across the beautiful little river.
If the weather is good, that would be a lovely train ride. We went to Chateau Chillion in Montreux, which we enjoyed very much, both for the castle and the lovely views. It is also on the Swiss Travel pass. Usually I wouldn't personally be interested in a day trip with so much time in transit, but this would be a lovely, relaxing trip. I'd bring breakfast and then cheese/bread/wine chocolate to enjoy during the train ride. Just know that you need to take a bus from the train to the chateau. no big deal.
EDITED TO ADD: We did Montreaux on our way to Geneva. So if you are going to more than just Muerren, it'd be more efficient to do it as part of a travel leg. Chateau Chillion does have luggage storage.
Why do you have to take a bus? We took the boat when we did it several years ago. Have things changed?
Tim, you took a bus to Chateau Chillion? We were there in January, so perhaps there was not a boat at that time. It was a very short bus ride, anyway.
