We originally were planning a day trip from Menaggio to Lugano. However, several sources have mentioned that Lugano isn't that interesting and advised against it. I've heard that a beautiful village to see is Graubunden but it's a much longer drive. If it's just a pretty area, I don't think it's worth the drive. We will be spending a large part of our Italy trip both in the Dolomites and Lake Como so we will see a lot of beautiful scenery. We're looking for some interesting villages to explore and since we've never been to Switzerland, thought it could be a worthwhile option.
Any suggestions?
Lugano and its lake are IMO more lovely than Como. But it's not particularly interesting. And it differs from the nearby portions of Italy primarily based on its being much more costly. You might consider just going into Milan.
I really enjoyed Lugano but if it's not appealing to you, drive a little farther to Belinzona. We loved it. There's a series of three castles you can visit and I just thought it was a cool town. Check it out and see if it's of interest.
Graubunden isn't a viIlage; it's one of the Swiss cantons--the one in the southeast. It is beautiful; the Bernina Express scenic train runs through Graubunden.
