Day Trip from Menaggio

Hi All

We are renting a villa in Menaggio and know how beautiful Lake Como is since we have been before and cant wait! We do have enough days though for 1 day trip to Switzerland. I know Zurich is far for a day trip, so not sure that is worth 7 hours total in the car. I was wondering if it is worth driving to the St. Moritz area OR taking the Bernise Express from Varenna to Tirano, so forth. Which is a better option? The youngest kids are 2 and 4 years old so worried if on the train they would love it at first then go stir crazy after a few hours! With the car we can stop at least. We have 8 adults and 4 kids. Thoughts?

Zürich is a big city, a nice big city, but that is not what Switzerland is about.
My suggestion is Lugano. The Swiss postbus from Tirano to Lugano goes via Mendrisio, or if you have a car take that. Then go on a trip on Lake Lugano.
Option 2 is a day trip to St. Moritz by car.

Side point, kids are LESS likely to go "Stir crazy" in a train.
In a car, they are belted in the back, cannot move, and cannot talk to the adults in the front.
In a train, they can spread out, sit on your lap, talk to you, go to the toilet and stretch their legs in the aisle. Best is to get a pair of 2+2 facing seats with a table between.
