Day trip from Lucern by train

Would like to take a day trip from Lucern to Interlaken or grindrlwald by train. Looked at some organized day tours and they all go by coach. Any suggestions on a day trip in this area to do on own or is it better to do an organized tour? Thanks

there is a beautiful and very easy to arrange train line over the Brünig Pass which starts in Luzern and ends at Interlaken Ost from where it is incredibly easy to get a train to either Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen for the whole Berner Oberland experience.

This is really easily done.

Is there a particular reason you want to go with a group?

Be aware that the bus will probably not go significantly faster than the train, the highway is only one lane each way unless they take an unscenic longer route around through the lowlands.

The train route I describe is one of the most scenic in Switzerland and you don't even need reservations.

Be aware that the train is 2 to 2:30 hours each way - you need to plan for a long day.

Thank you for your response. I don’t really want to go with a group but sometimes with a tour group you get more info. I like your suggestion

By train, you are also free to go at your own schedule. You do not say what time of year. You may want to take one of the lifts/trains at Grindelwald to visit First, or Eigergletcher, or Kleine Scheidegg. Returning, you could stop at Interlaken Ost station, and take a lake cruise on the Brienzersee to Brienz and continue back to Luzern by train from there.

Costwise, will you have some sort of pass like the Swiss Travel Pass, or Half Fare Card? That will reduce the cost. Otherwise, look at a Saver Day Pass, bought for a specific day well in advance for about 52 CHF per person. Unfortunately, this does not include discounts on the lifts/trains above Grindelwald, but does include the boat.
