Day trip from Bern to Berner Oberland

Hello,
We are going to be in Switzerland this June for few days. I am planning a day trip from Bern to Berner Oberland and I have a hard time deciding where to go - Grindelwald or Gimmelwald or some other town and what to plan when there. We are family of three with a 12 years old kid. We are not going to have a car but use Swiss Pass. I would like to include some hikes in the day itinerary. I looked through a lot of different sites and Rick Steves guide for Switzerland, but still can't decide and plan the details (lifts, gondola, etc.). Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Go to Lauterbrunnen and visit the tourist office at the train station to get map of the hiking trails in the area. They can also point you to trails of the difficulty level you want and how to get there. Even a walk up and down the Lauterbrunnen valley is a great way to spend the day. You can also rent a bike.

Before you know it, you'll be wising you were based out of the Lauterbrunnen valley and were planning a daytrip to Bern.

Fast Eddie is right about about wishing the day trip was the other way around.

Too bad only one day and no car. I would go to Inerlaken and take the bus down through the Lauterbrunnen Valley to Stechelberg. From there take the Shilthornbahn all the way up to the Schilthorn. The views are magnificent, including the Eiger, the Monk and the Jungfrau. On the way back down, as time allows, you can stop at Murren and Gimmelwald. Lauterbrunnen is also a neat little village you will pass through on the way to and from Stechelberrg, we usually stay there and use it as a base assuming we can pry ourselves away from the view from our hotel room balcony.

Grindelwald is nice but it is rather commercial and you don't get to see the real beauty of the Berner Oberland .... sort of like going to the Grand Canyon and stopping at the parking lot.

Have a good time.

You don't have to decide until you get there.

Please consider staying up in the BO rather than in Bern. Its not that much farther. Going back and forth on a day trip from Bern will eat up most of the day, leaving little time for "some hikes".
