We arrive in Zurich , early morning , too early to check in to hotel , what is a good tour or walk we can follow to fill our day , walking not a problem, want to get a feel for the city esp. old town. All suggestions are appreciated !

Same for us.
We will be flying into ZUR , take the train to the HB station and explore Zurich before catching a train over the Alps to Italy the next morning. ( if needed make use of the luggage storage lockers at train station or hotel if available)
In looking into Zurich it has a number of museums. Looking forward to visiting Kunsthaus (sic) Zurich and seeing the Monets , Van Gogh and others. Also the Swiss Museum looks interesting. The rest of the time we will spend strolling around the lake.
I'm wondering what others think of the Zurich airport.
Some of the shops and eateries looking interesting.

I admit I have not been to ZRH (correct 3-letter airport code) since EES got underway, but it has been my favorite European airport. You can buy a day ticket for the airport to the city center for 14.40 CHF. Then you have the transport from the airport to the main station, Zurich HB, and free use of public transportation in the city center for the rest of the day, including the trams and even some short lake boat rides, like from Buerkliplatz to Wollishofen or Tiefenbrunnen. The Kunsthaus museum is a short ride from Zurich HB on the #3 tram. The Swiss National Museum is just across the street from Zurich HB, and is interesting if you want to learn about Swiss history from prehistory to the present.

If you are arriving by train, and you just want to take a nice walk from the train station, you can walk down Bahnhofstrasse to the lake. Bahnhofstrasse is the high-end shopping area, but it leads down to the lake, which is very scenic. When you get to the lake, you can take one of the tour boats which sail around the lake for about an hour. You can buy the ticket on site. From the train station down Bahnhofstrasse to the lake is about 1.4 km. Less than a mile. When you get to the lake, you can either take one of the tour boats, or you can turn left and walk along the lakefront.
If I had just one day I would not spend it in a museum. I would want to see the city. Except for a brief stop in one museum, which is the Beyer Watch and Clock Museum, which is at Bahnhofstrasse 31, right along your route. The cost is 10 CHF.

If you have a reservation at a hotel you very likely can leave your luggage there before your check-in time. That'll save you a lot of hassle getting around in Zürich.
