Cost of classic train routes

Fellow 'Advisors', could someone provide an easy source of the average or typical cost of standard tickets on what I will call the 'classic' train routes in Switzerland (Golden Pass, Glacier Express, Bernina Express, William Tell, ect.) I a trying to compare the benefits of the Swiss Travel Pass over other approaches to ticketing.

Maybe what I need is the names of the towns at each end of the classic routes OR may there be special trains (special cars for instance) that run the particular.

I have found unraveling what I'm sure is a fabulous transport system to be daunting. HELP.

I would start here, the RS Switzerland rail pass page. The full-fare cost of the train routes you listed depends on whether you want first or second class, where you start and end, whether you want a reserved seat, and so on.

The Half-Fare Card usually is the most economical rail pass option but the Swiss Travel Pass offers more convenience and covers museums.

There really is not any price difference with the "classic" routes and regular trains that ply the same rails. What is different is that each has a separate "reservation" fee that must be paid for riding them. This is usually a single charge, and it is not covered by travel passes. For instance, on the Glacier Express there is a 33 CHF fee in the summer and a 13 CHF fee in the winter, and a summer short-trip fee of 23 CHF. This covers the added cost of the panorama coaches, headsets with multi-lingual narration of the sights along the way, and added waiter/waitress service on-board.

If you want to find the cost of a regular train that travels the same tracks as the "classics", use SBB.ch ( or rail.ch to go straight to English). Nputnin the start and finishnpoint and click "buy". The next page should display the price after you choose an appropriate Pass or "no reduction."
