RS says the section between Montreux-Zweisimmen is one of two (the other one is in Norway) best scenic rides in all of Europe. I've been on the one from Lucerne to Interlaken Ost via Lungern, and found it very scenic. For those of you have taken both routes, is the ride Montreux-Zweisimmen worth making a special trip and is it significantly better than Lucerne-Interlaken Ost?
This is one of the times where I disagree with RS. It’s a nice ride and a decent option if you need to get between Montreux and the Jungfrau Region, but not something I’d go out of my way to do. The ride he speaks of in Norway is a bit more otherworldly/unique, but that one I probably wouldn’t do again either. The most scenic train ride in my opinion is the Brienzer Rothorn. That one I would definitely do again.
If you fast forward through this video you get a really good idea of the type of views you get on the Golden Pass. Lots of green hills, rivers and roads. It’s not large mountain views: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aJGZg0UP00Q
I'd have to disagree too.
On our trip last year we did many trains. The Bernina Express was the most scenic by a long way, followed by the Glacier Express route.
We did the Goldenpass from Interlaken to Montreux and while it was pretty it didn't compare to the other two, or other more local train rides in the BO region.
I disagree too. I've been to Montreux via Zweisimmen, and it was a nice ride. Not sufficiently fab to go back the same way - I took the fast train via the Rhone Valley back.
I absolutely love the ride from Luzern via Meiringen and the Brünig Pass which has it all - waterfalls, lakes, mountains and mountain villages.
One route which doesn't get as much love as I think it is worth is the old slow route between Brig and Spiez, the Lötchberger. It used to be the main line via Domodossola but since the opening of the fast deep basistunnel between Visp and Spiez, most people take the fast train and miss the views across the Kandertal as the slow train climbs up and over the mountains instead of under.
There is a lot of really beautiful scenery in Switzerland.
Thanks, all! Good to see a unanimous opinion that it's not worth making a special trip to ride Montreux-Zweisimmen.
