Chur to Tirano - cost (??)

I have posted before, but have a more specific question. I have searched to try and figure cost for our budget. I looked at prices and routes on SBB, DB and ItaliaRail. I have been looking for tickets in segments on the regional trains, Chur-Samedan, Samedan-Pontresina, Pontresina- Tirano. We’d like to have the option of getting of and stretching our legs.

My issue is that I either can’t find tentative tickets prices, or they differ depending on site. I’d like to get a ball park idea of what that trip will cost in US dollars.

TIA 😊

You might get a Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Pass. But how many days are you in Switzerland?

You should register and only use the Sbb site for researching prices in Switzerland. April 23 is too far in advance but if you search about a month in advance you will get an idea of the prices as the fares on Swiss Train routes are fixed. Pay heed though that the Sbb site defaults to show half the price of a fare. It does this because most on Switzerland have the Half Fare Card.

63 CHF per person. That is about $65 pp.
You could also buy a Saver Day Pass 60 days in advance for 52 CHF without a Half Fare Card, or 29 CHF if you get a Half Fare Card.

Wow! Jazz, thanks! Didn’t know about the half price listings. We are only in Switzerland for 2 days. We are traveling from where our son lives in Kandern, Germany to Italy with an overnight in Chur. We spend time in Switzerland on our last visit 😊

I searched the fare information on the Swiss train app and found what was posted above, 63CHF (126CHF for two) For Chur – Tirano . But if I priced it out by each leg, I got just over 110 CHF using the Super Saver prices. Would that be our better option?? Just purchase a ticket from one town to the next, then by the next ticket when we are ready to head on?

In Switzerland, you can hop on and off along any route during the day as long as you stick to that route and don't double back, so the 63 CHF pp price is the correct one. However, you can buy a Saver Day Pass for that day for 52 CHF pp if you buy it at least 60 days in advance. You can ride any train in Switzerland for the day you pick for the whole day (except tourist trains requiring seat reservations like the Bernina Express). So if that April 23 date is fixed, it would be worth it. The prices increase as you you get closer to your intended travel date, so buy early.

Just want to clarify....

If we buy super saver passes for April 25, at 8:58 from Chur to Tirano, arriving at 13:00, with scheduled stops in Samedan and Pontresina, we can board at 8:58, but stay longer in Samedan and/or Pontresina and continue on at a later time as long as it’s the same day? We’d like to spend a few hours in Pontresina 😊

Problem, that generally on weekends, the lowest Saver Day Pass available, even 60 days out, is 70 CHF. April 25 is a Saturday. So if that is the case, just buy a ticket from Chur to Tirano for 63 CHF. You can hop on and off all day long. Last train arrives in Tirano at 10:26 pm, so that is the limit of the duration of your ticket.

Then a Saver Day Pass for 52 CHF should be available for that date.

There is a legal trick possible. Buy a German issues ticket that cover this sector and discard the sectors you don't need. Seat61.com has the detailed instructions on how to do it.
