Christmas in Switzerland/NY in Vienna!

We are meeting our daughter in Zurich on December 21 to travel over the (school) holidays. I'd planned for Christmas in Bern because I'd read somewhere that that was spectaular. Our plans are very maleable, as we aren't sure if we will travel mostly by train or car yet. We are going to take a surprise day trip to Barryland - the St. Bernard Museum (https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-us/experiences/barryland-the-saint-bernard-museum/) on one of the days.

We have been to Murren and Gimmelwald in the summmer time and know they will be amazing in winter. We are concerned now with where to be for special meals on the holidays, as we know that most things will be closed. Do you have suggestions or ideas about what you would do? Thank you so much for your help. Happy travels!

Accomodation in Mürren or any other ski resort will be nearly impossible to secure for less than a week at Christmas, and very expensive. So you'll probably have to stay in the valley, which is fine. And if you can deal with snow on the ground, then yes, the region is magical.
Trains, trains, trains are really the way to go, they're super efficient and you don't want to deal with wintry road conditions. Also, you can't rent a car in Switzerland and drop it off in Austria at an acceptable price.
I have no idea what's special in Bern for Christmas but I trust your source. Likewise I can't advise on restaurants for the holiday meals.
