Can we get Gimmelwald made farmer's cheese back through US customs? It's vacuum sealed but we don't want to ruin our Global Entry status by doing the wrong thing. Thanks!
Cheese - Solid cheese (hard or semi-soft, that does not contain meat); butter, butter oil, and cultured milk products such as yogurt and sour cream are not restricted. Feta cheese, Brie, Camembert, cheese in brine, Mozzarella and Buffalo Mozzarella are permissible (USDA Animal Product Manual, Table 3-14-6). Cheese in liquid (such as cottage cheese or ricotta cheese) and cheese that pours like heavy cream are not admissible from countries affected by foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Cheese containing meat is not admissible depending on the country of origin.
We brought cheese back from Amsterdam with no problem. It was a hard cheese, vacuum sealed. We purchased it in a cheese store and they usually know which are okay to take home.
I brought some back. In the GE entry process, you are asked if you are bringing back food. You are still supposed to say yes, the screener will ask you what you have, but they won't take it from you, since it meets the rules. No big deal. Recognizing that many people are vehemently opposed to declaring anything and manage to get through anyway.
Cheese yes, meat no.
Were in Switzerland in June. Brought home 18 different kinds of cheese, 31 lbs.
Not a problem.
As long as you answer the question about having food correctly, there is no issue with losing Global Entry. It is when you lie about having food with you that is can be an issue if you do get stopped and checked.
If what you have doesn't meet the requirements, they will just take the cheese away from you.
Thanks for all of your help! We got to Miami, filled out our Global Entry forms, the customs agent very nonchalantly asked my husband what kind of cheese we had and waved us on......YEAH! We made it home fine with our 4 package of cheese, thanks to your help!
Make sure you don't have the cheese in your carry-on. Cheese marked as soft or creamy is subject to being confiscated at the discretion of the screener.
