Chateau de Chillon

We are a group of 6 friends staying 5 days in Vevey in July. We are wanting to visit Chateau de Chillon. Do we need to purchase advance tickets? I understand that it gets crowded and worry that they might sell out. Also any recommendations for activities and restaurants that we should not miss would be appreciated.

No need to buy tickets in advance. In fact, some hotel/B&B owners give a Riviera card to their guests which gives free access to the trains and buses along the Lake Geneva area. It also gives free or deep discounts for attractions like Chillon. Go early or late to avoid crowds.

Please find a link below for the local tourism which offers excellent information for this area. The second link is for Chateau Chillion directly where they list the best times to visit. Other popular attractions are Rochers de Naye, Gruyeres, Lavaux Vineyards, the boat ride on the lake. Lausanne is 20 min from Vevey, which is a much larger city. See tourism link for popular attractions there.

When you visit the Chateau, If it's not raining and you enjoy walking, take the bus or train from Vevey to Montreux Marche. At the Marche facing the waterfront, make a left and walk to Chateau Chillon, which will take about 30 min.

Since you will be staying in Vevey, don't miss the market on Tuesday and Saturday morning at the Marche.
Take the short walk along the waterfront from Vevey to the port of La Tour de Peilz.
Take the boat anywhere along the lake.

If you enjoy walking, the vineyards in Lavaux offer breathtaking views, charming villages. Go early before the heat of the day.

Don't miss The Deck for a drink and views.

Since it's hot in July, I also recommend a swim in the lake. There are showers at various spots along the waterfront where you can rinse off before and after.

Hi Jeane! Will you be there for the Jazz festival in Montreux? You could check out a concert or go to the free ones along the lake in Parc Vernex in Montreux. And maybe it's cliche, but my wife and I really enjoyed taking the Nestle Chocolate Factory tour in Broc (1.5 hours by transit).
