Chamonix and Mont Blanc from Geneva

Has anyone done a tour from Geneva to Chamonix and done the cable car up to Mont Blanc. Is it worthwhile day trip from Geneva? If anyone has either just visited the town or also done Mont Blanc would be interested in your thoughts.

Stephanie,

Would you prefer to do this with a guided tour or on your own? One method you could use is to book one of the many Chamonix shuttles. These typically depart from either the airport or main rail station. The trip is about an hour as I recall.

You can buy tickets to the Aguille du Midi at the cable car station. Check their website for hours of operation and ticket prices.

One minor caveat to mention.... If you have any altitude issues, the top of the Aguille is at about 12,600 feet. Some people have problems with that after they've been there a few hours.

You might also want to have a look at the RS France guidebook for info on other activities in that area.

I have always stayed in chamonix village as it is small, quaint and relaxing.
But if u only have a day, def shuttle over , no need for a tour guide.
Also weather can change dramatically very quickly . So if u are based in Geneva u can ck the forecast and then make your decision, to go or not. My last trip in July they shut down gondolas as the storm brought snow and o visibility. Two days lost just waiting for the weather to get better.

I did this about a dozen years ago when I lived in Geneva, and I enjoyed it. Took a bus in one day, stayed overnight in a hostel, and took a bus back the next day. There's the cable car up to A. du Midi, a nice river running thru town and under restaurants. There are trails you can take on the other side of the valley.
I got the bus at Gare Routiere, a bus station half way between Cornavin train station and the lake. Also a Flixbus leaves from there, which I believe also goes to Chamonix. You should be able to find different buses that go there using the Internet.
