Cern tours recent experience

Has anyone reserved for an individual tour lately? Any advice on securing one of the rare slots? Any advice about touring and exhibits that one can observe on one's own?

Any advice about hotels in the area or on the French side?

We went two summers ago and were lucky enough to reserve tickets ahead of time. Here is the website with the detailed information about how to obtain tickets. You can't go underground to the collider...you see the control room, watch a movie about the collider, and learn about how it works and what they are doing. Our guide was a particle physicist and I felt like I was taking a master's class...it was really amazing and well worth going. Good luck!

I want to go in September. Apparently you can only reserve 15 days in advance so I am trying to figure out how it works. At 8:30 this morning my time (US central) April 1 was not available yet to reserve. AT 9 I checked again and all slots were taken? So when exactly does registration open up so I can be poised on the computer when they are available? How did you manage to snag the individual reservations?

The reservation system must have worked differently when we went because I booked our tour several months in advance. They only allow 11 people on each tour so just a few families will fill the spots quickly I imagine. Just keep trying! Rather than waiting 1/2 hour, try planting yourself at your computer and keep trying every few minutes until you get into the system. This is often what you have to do for many things in Europe that are popular...The Globe Theater, Highclere Castle...they can be difficult to get in to but persistence and timing pays off!

thanks. Yeah -- they make clear they only book 15 days out which is awkward since we will be traveling then and with perhaps unreliable wifi -- would love to be able to do it from home. I don't know when to start trying to book (what time)

I have often bought tickets on line like this e.g. for the Eiffel Tower or for Paris Opera and of course you jump on at the precise moment and keep logging in till you make it -- I can't figure out when this one starts. That is why is am experimenting now. I hoped someone might have done it recently enough to know. But thanks for your experience.
