Car Vs Train in Switzerland

My husband and I will be in Switzerland for our 3rd time for two weeks the end of Aug - Sept. We will be flying into Zurich and then taking a train to Brienz for 2 days & then to Wengen for 4 days. Then back to Zurich to rent a car to go to the areas of Andermott, Marcote', & Soglio. This will be our 1st time to drive here though and would like to see scenery, little villages, and explore areas that train might not show us. We have driven through Italy and Ireland so are experienced driving in other countries, but would like the advice of those who have possibly done both types of transportation and what your thoughts are regarding doing either in these areas. Also, will there be a problem taking a rental car into Italy? Thanks for any help or thoughts you can give.

Only the company where you rent the car can answer that question.

If you are not using an EU driving license/licence you need an IDP to drive in Italy. You don't need one for Switzerland.

The only people who will know if they have any restrictions on driving in Italy or taking the specific car they are renting to you into Italy will be the rental company. They are the ones to ask.

Also, if you are planning on using your credit card for collision and damage coverage on the rental car, check carefully for coverage in Italy. My American Express, for example, specifically excludes Italy.

When you rent a car in Italy, you include CDW coverage in the cost of rental; they don't let you decline it. I don't know how this works with cars rented in Switzerland and then driven into Italy. Lots of people do that, so there must be a way to manage the insurance, but you need to make sure you have it figured out.
