Arriving at the end of May, which route is the most reliable (weather wise) to reach a car train to travel towards Zermatt? Will be arriving around 5pm, passport control, pick-up car and then on our way. Planning to drive down the road a bit and then stay overnight. Suggestion on best/easiest city in which to stay with parking on the route? Thanks!

Try Hotel Lyssach at Kirchberg, just off the highway before Bern. Parking lot, restaurant, advertised at 120 CHF per night for a double room. https://www.hotel-lyssach.ch/Hotel/Doppelzimmer.htm

Any particular reason why you are getting a rental car to do a trip that is faster and more comfortable by train? To a place that is car free? Looks like making things more complicated...

After departing from Zermatt, we will be driving the passes and touring that area before returning to Zurich. We visited the Dolomites last year and enjoyed them very much. Would like our adult son to experience some of the passes/that area before our return. If we weren't doing that, we would definitely consider train travel.
