We had planned on purchasing two half fare cards for mom and dad. The junior card allows the kids to travel free...but it's not clear on the SBB website if the two can be used together. Anyone ever try this?

Yes, buy 2 Half Fare Cards and a free Family Card. Children under 16 travel free if accompanied by at least one parent.

The Junior Card allows kids to travel free with their parents if their parents are using any type of Swiss Travel System Ticket, such as a Swiss Pass, a full-fare point-to-point ticket, or a Half Fare Card and discounted point-to-point ticket.

Laura and Sam - thank you....quick question...what's the difference between the family card and the junior card? Are they one in the same?

I believe that they are the same with regards to the free travel. You can get the Swiss Family Card free online by request when you purchase other train tickets or Swiss passes or cards. I believe that you purchase the Junior Card when you arrive in Switzerland. It may cost 30CHF. As mentioned above, either will provide free travel for the child as long as he/she travels with one parent with a valid ticket (any kind of valid ticket. It doesn't have to be a pass or card). The free travel includes travel to the high mountain tops.
