Can only pick one: Appenzell, Switzerland or Berchtesgaden, Germany?

My husband and I are torn -- do we spend 3 days (mid July) in Appenzell, Switzerland, or Berchtesgaden, Germany???

We are in our 30's, enjoy all exercise (easy walks to steep, technical hikes), no kids, enjoy being outdoors and in peaceful settings, dislike tourist traps, museums are second to nature/outdoors activities, and will be traveling by car only. I'm a photographer so scenery is a plus. Both places look incredibly beautiful. Accommodation costs look comparable at this point. We enjoy driving, so this decision isn't contingent on where we're coming from or going to next.

Please help! Both towns seem to have so much to offer! Thank you :-)

Berchtesgaden will be a lot cheaper, if that is any factor. You may also need to buy a Swiss vignette for the car unless you rented it in Switzerland.

I think the area around Berchtesgaden is very beautiful - also make a point of visiting the "Eagles Nest" where Hitler vacationed during the war.
