Can I see SNOW at Niederhorn or murren in May?

Hi all,

I will come to switzerland for my pre-wedding photoshoot in May 2018, i cannot change the date but photoshoot with snow view is my biggest wish. I was planned to go to Zermatt but the transportation fee is too expensive, i couldn't afford it as i have to pay for the shooting crew as well.

Therefore, i am searching an alternative, would like to ask if Niederhorm or Murren would be a good choice?

Or would you please give me more advises?

Thanks so much!!

I'm not sure whether it's possible to predict snow at either location in May, as that's too far in the future. Whether you'll be able to see snow will depend on what type of winter conditions they have this year. There will probably be some snow on surrounding mountains so if you just want that in the background, that should work.

Generally speaking, the higher up you are the better your chances of snow. So, at what elevation are you willing to do your photo shoot? Are you o.k. with freezing temperatures?

It would also depend on what your idea of "snow view" is. Have you talked that over with your shooting crew? Do you just want to see yourself against the backdrop of a snow-capped mountain somewhere way in the background? Or do you want your own feet to be in the snow? That is going to make a big difference in where you have to be for the photos.

Talk to your crew about this. If they are any good, they will advise you on what is possible and what is not. This sounds like a pretty expensive plan if you are taking your own crew along, and if the photos you have in mind aren't possible to begin with, you should hear that from them in advance.

Have you maybe also considered hiring a local photographer instead? They will know the best spots in the area, and their travel expenses would certainly be a lot less than bringing a crew of your own.

These days with global warming nothing is guaranteed.

Almost certainly there will be no snow in Muerren in May, and Niederhorn is quite low. That being said I've never been to Niederhorn.

You will probably have to go much higher to find significant snow - certainly to be sure enough to have it near you for the photos.

Zermatt might be more certain, but not cheap. But then nowhere in Switzerland is cheap.

It sounds like you are travelling with your party a long way. Is it so much more money to go where you would like to go? Are you bringing the shooting crew with you or hiring them locally?

Thanks all for the information :( though it's a sad news to me.
i would like to touch and surrounded by snow, not in the far background only.
and i will bring the shooting crew with me from HK, therefore zermatt or Jungfraujoch is definitely too expensive for me...

A suggestion, if you want a photoshoot with snow in the background.
Hire a car (or a van to for in the crew as well), and drive up to one of the high passes over the Alps.
These roads are closed by snow, from November to May. They try and clear the roads for the holiday weekends in May, so the exact opening date varies. If they are open, you are assured of snow at the top of the pass.

Look up: Grimselpass, Furkapass, Nufenenpass, Gotthardpass

This website lists the passes and which are open or closed: https://www.alpen-paesse.ch/en/

If they are open, you are assured of snow at the top of the pass.

And if they are closed, you are assured of snow everywhere. :-)

@ff_714: What's "HK"?

It's probably Hong Kong, Anna. That's an abbreviation I use myself, so I'm just guessing.

You also might want to look at Mt. Titlis or Mt. Pilates You go to Engleberg which is a nice town for Mt. Titlis and Lucerne fo Mt. Pilates I was at both in late May and there was plenty of snow at the top. If the day is clear, then you can see snow topped mountains for miles from Mt. Titlis. . There are cable cars to the top.

You also have to consider the weather as it can be cloudy. You may want to plan to stay several days. If it is cloudy, you will need an alternate option. I would also suggest that once you decide on a location, you contact the location to see if there are any regulations or conditions that there might exist, or if they have any help they can provide.

There will certainly be snow in May if you base yourself in Murren and take the gondola up to the Schilthorn. We went up in late June and there was still so much snow that our preferred hiking trail was closed for too much snow.
