I downloaded the SBB app. Is giving me the option to buy a saver day pass for two, but I don’t have the half fare pass. I’m not sure if I need it?
You don't have to have a Half Fare Card to buy a Saver Day Pass, but you'll pay a higher price without one. The starting price for a second-class SDP, when it initially goes on sale (six months ahead of the usage date, I think), is CHF 29 if you have a Half Fare Card and CHF 52 if you do not.
Cost of an SDP increases as the travel date approaches (due to demand as indicated by purchases by others, I assume). Depending on your travel plans for the SDP day, the price of the SDP can escalate over time to the point that it is no longer a good deal. Keep in mind, though, that by default the ticket prices shown on the SBB website assume the purchaser has a Half-Fare Card.
Anyone using an SDP purchased at the Half-Fare-Card price must have a Half Fare Card.
See the post from the better-informed SwissNomad immediately below. I wasn't aware of the special offer on a Saver day Pass for Two.

The option that you see in the app is a 'Day Pass for Two'. It is a limited time offer in which one person MUST have a Half Fare Card. It is not the same thing as purchasing two individual Saver Day Passes.
- Cost is 78.00 for two
- Can be purchased on the day of travel or before
- available and valid from 16 September to 28 October 2024
