cable car tickets

We will be staying just 2 nights in Gimmelwald in July (just a couple of weeks away), I have read some older posts and looked at the Schilthornbahn and Swiss Half Fare websites and I'm getting more confused all the time. If we want to use the lifts for about 2 1/2 days (we haven't decided exactly what we will be doing each day - just going to Murin and the Schilthorn, and potentially having to take a bike back up the lift) am I better off purchasing the Half Fare card and then individual tickets or is there a daily pass? Do I need to plan what we are doing each day? I would like to have the freedom to make choices when we get there. Any recommendations?

Since the Half Fare Card costs 120 chf, you need to have 240 chf worth of tickets before you break even. Where are you coming from outside of Switzerland and where are you leaving from? What is your means of travel within Switzerland?

You don't need to plan in advance. Tickets are available at each station. Typical fare Lauterbrunnen to Murren 11 CHF one way with no discounts. There are manned ticket offices during the day (closed for lunch mid-day in Murren) and ticket machines always available. You would need to think carefully if your total use in Switzerland would make having a half-fare card cost effective.

Thanks for the information. We will be driving in from Italy and heading to Appenzell after Grimmelwald. I'm glad to hear you can purchase tickets at each leg.

With your minimal public transport use (you have a car) you don't need any pass at all. Just buy the simple little one way ticket from the ticket counter at the schilthornbahn. A couple of weeks ago we were there and the ticket counter at the Gimmelwald station was unmanned, but there is a self service ticket kiosk located just beside the ticket window. The cost will be minimal.

Thanks for the help and quick responses. We will just purchase one way tickets and as we need them.

You might aim for an early-bird Schilthorn discount; e.g., the "sunrise ticket" costs CHF 77.00 Stechelberg – Schilthorn roundtrip, which you can buy until 8.55 in the morning.

If you were to stay at the Hotel Alpenruh your inclusive breakfast could be taken in the revolving restaurant in the Schilthorn. You still must purchase the transport tickets, only your bfast up there would be free.

Unless you're getting a deal as mentioned, do NOT dare to eat at the revolving restaurant unless you are about to expire. Because when you get the bill you WILL need medical support.
