Cable car maintenance and access to Murren

Look at Schilthorn.ch for the latest details. I don’t see anything about the Lauterbrunnen - Grutschalp - Mürren route being closed.

You’re looking at info for 2025, which was based on them replacing the new funifor up to Schilthorn last year, not relevant to 2026. Schilthorn is open 365 days a year via the direct route from Stechelberg > Mürren > Birg > Schilthorn.

Also - They never close all 3 routes simultaneously. People live up there and have to have access to their homes. And no, they don’t use a supply cable car to bring up people. The new direct cable car replaced the old supply line. Details not relevant to your trip.

Mürren Via Grutschalp & via Gimmelwald will be closed during your trip for maintenance, but the direct route from Stechelberg to Mürren will be open.

Bus Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg > Cable car to Mürren > optional continue up to Schilthorn if you want to visit that

Just so you have correct expectations for your trip, much of the area closes down for maintenance end of Oct - end of November in preparation for ski season. Expect many restaurants to be closed, as well as viewpoints such as Allmendhubel, Mannlichen, Schynige Platte, etc. You can visit Schilthorn & Jungfraujoch 365 days a year. The rest of the area will be fairly quiet for maintenance.

You can just use the SBB app or look at the website sbb.ch

Enter the date 10.25 for Lauterbrunnen - Mürren and you will see that you can go either via Grütschalp or via Stechelberg.

On 10.26 and 10.27 you can only go via Stechelberg (this is the bus followed by cable car option).

If you want to go to Gimmelwald on day two or three of your holiday, just to look around, you can see that there is a replacement bus from the Mürren Schilthornbahn station to Gimmelwald - so you could go there and back by bus…a novel experience.

Note: when a route is closed SBB will show you that as well. If you enter Lauterbrunnen - Grütschalp for 10.26 you will see "Oops, nothing's moving here"

I am not seeing where the site distinguish the faster stechelberg - murren cablle car from the slower stechelberg- grimmelwald -murren cable car

I assume you are telling me the Stechelberg-murren faster cable car will be open the entire route

To see this you have to look one day earlier, when the Gimmelwald (note the spelling) option is open.

In SBB look at:

• Lauterbrunnen - Mürren for Sunday 25.10
• you need to add in Via Gimmelwald because this is slower and the app does not automatically show you this option.
• Now you will see that it runs every half hour
• Click on one option, 9:35 for example
• You see the breakdown of the journey, first bus to Stechelberg then gondola to Gimmelwald and a second gondola to Mürren

You do not need this option unless you are going to Gimmelwald on your first day. After that it will be closed for maintenance and Gimmelwald can be accessed by either

1. walk from Mürren
2. Bus from Mürren

will be open the entire route

Yes. You can use this every day of your holiday.

For variety you can choose to go via Grütschalp on your arrival day. That is what I would do, the view is very nice and it is your only chance to experience it, if you want to.

When arriving in Lauterbrunnen by train you have 3 typical options to get up to Mürren…

1. Cross the street to the cable car station > cable car to Grutschalp > train to Mürren - this is the fastest option and you arrive on the north side of the village

2. Cross the street to Bus 141 to Stechelberg > Bus to Stechelberg Schilthornbahn Station > cable car to Mürren - this is the route most day trippers take if they are just going up to the Schilthorn, if you’re parking your car at Stechelberg or arriving by tour bus, or if someone wants to arrive on the south side of the village. It stops running when Schilthorn closes for the day, so it’s never an option in the evening. Except during this maintenance work they’ll run it later in the evening.

3. Cross the street to Bus 141 to Stechelberg > Bus to Stechelberg Schilthornbahn Station > cable car to Gimmelwald > Cable car to Mürren - this is the slowest option, but also open the latest (weekdays until almost midnight, weekends until after midnight). Arrives on the south side of the village in the same building as Option #2

As you can see, options 2 & 3 leave from the same “Stechelberg Schilthornbahn” station. These two cable cars depart from the exact same building. For the direct to Mürren you walk upstairs to departure area. For the route via Gimmelwald you walk downstairs to the old portion of the building.
