Any recommendations for buying a Macbook Air in Switzerland with a US Keyboard (not a separate keyboard)? A family member needs to replace a nonfunctioning Macbook and the cost for shipping is expensive and getting one with a built in US keyboard seems difficult.
Not sure about that, but it's relatively easy to change your keyboard on a Mac. I do it all the time with German. Just go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources. Click the + (plus) sign at the bottom left to add a keyboard layout (select Others in the left-side pane to display the list).
To easily switch between different languages, just add a language input menu un the menu bar. I have both keyboards in my menu bar at the top. I've configured a 2-key shortcut to easily change it from English to German and vice versa.
This of course does not change your physical keyboard - just the keystrokes. But if you want to actually see the 2nd keyboard, click the language button in the system tray and select Show Keyboard View, and a picture of the keyboard will appear.
US keyboard. Probably not. Shipping will probably trigger duty charges. If the person is there long term, they should have someone bring one? If in Switzerland long term, like a semester or two of research, the person may want to join a local expat group to ask the question. If not long term, they'll just have to buy one when they get home or do as Mardee said. This comes up in expat discussion groups.
We use two languages and I much prefer having the symbol match the stroke.
The Apple Switzerland website lets you pick your keyboard layout in the configurator. US keyboard is on the list! Prices look OK thanks to low sales tax in Switzerland.
Good to know, balso!
I've bought several Apple notebooks directly from Apple, with US keyboard. Works very well.
Another good solution is Digitec. Especially if you are travelling and cannot have something delivered. Digitec has pick-up locations in all major Swiss cities.
Great info balso and WengenK because this question comes up in English-speaking groups. Thank you.
