How and where is the best way to buy the swiss pass for travel in September?
You can buy in advance via the Rick Steves website, or at www.sbb.ch, or just get it when you arrive in Switzerland.
Thanks. Are all options the same price?
Should I buy the insurance for $23.50?
They should be about the same price, depending on exchange rates. If you fly into Switzerland, you can buy passes there, but if you're coming by train from another country, you would want the railpass already in hand. Our price goes down a few dollars tomorrow, so you could let your shopping cart clear out and start over tomorrow. If your pass costs $950 for two people, you might want to pay $23 for the Rail Protection Plan that covers loss or theft in Europe, but there is paperwork (like a police report) if you have to make an insurance claim; see that topic discussed at http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-help/rail-faq. With or without the insurance, treat the railpass like cash.
Thanks Laura I'll check out the discount at RS site and go without the insurance. Do you insure delivery?
I posted a question on need of reservations with pass. Could you chime in?
Thanks for all the great advice on this forum.
