Today, we found out that our Unlimited Jungfrau Pass did not cover the bus ride from Waldspitz to Grindelwald. We had to pay $27 per person. What a ripoff! What buses are covered by the pass? Is the bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg covered by the Unlimited? It’s hard to find specific information on their website.
It’s really not hard to tell, they have a validity map for the pass online. Yes, the Stechelberg/Lauterbrunnen bus is included. Did you not buy a half fare card? Those mountain buses are 13.50 with HFC. And no, they really are not a rip off. High quality buses are picking you up high in the mountains and driving you 30+ minutes to your destination on winding mountain roads. A taxi would cost way more than that if you could even get one. If you didn’t get a half fare card, you should have because the discount it gives you on the Unlimited Jungfrau Pass + discounts on things like that bus would have more than paid for itself.
They also have the validity listed out in addition to the map. Note bus info at the bottom. Taken from their website:

Didn’t have my Half Fare card with me because we didn’t originally plan on hiking down to Walspitz from Lake Bachalpsee to escape the crowds at First and only had our Unlimited pass to go up to First to start the day. So that is my fault. The hike down to Waldspitz was glorious. Best of the trip so far and we only saw 4 people. Also, when I originally picked up the Unlimited pass with the reduced rate at Interlaken Ost train station, the ticket agent didn’t even ask to our Half Fare cards.
…ask to see our Half Fare cards.
You do not need the HFC To buy discounted tickets. You only need it when travelling with discounted tickets. That is why it is not asked when you buy the ticket, but is often asked during a ticket inspection on the train.
You should indeed always have the HFC with you, for cases like this.
The Unlimited Jungfrau Pass is a pass offered by the Jungfrau Railways Group, and therefore originally only included the companies that are part of the group. It is only recently that the Schilthorn was added, and because of that they also added the Lauterbrunnen - Stechelberg bus. Last year I still had to pay for those (I have been getting this pass every year since I moved here. In Winter I get the unlimited Winter Pass...)
The busses in Grindelwald were never part of this pass, as it is an other company (Grindelwald Bus) that operates those, and for the mountain busses they do not receive any subsidies. Because almost everyone has the HFC they actually set the prices so that the discounted price covers their operating costs. People without HFC are effectively charged double. The Jungfrau Railway does exactly that. The CEO of the Jungfrau Railway has stated that in his opinion the HFC should be abolished, and that the discounted price should be the normal price.
All good info. Thank you locals. I'm packing today for our arrival via Geneva and Bern. The Jungfrau Pass is at our hotel.
@ Elizabeth - to be clear, this thread is discussing the Unlimited Summer Jungfrau Pass (a pass for residents and long term visitors), which is different than the Jungfrau Pass, so don’t rely on my info above about what it covers, as yours will be different.
@cihajim - just put the QR code for your half fare card on your phone so you always have it with you
No one has ever asked to see my HFC when I show them my Unlimited Jungfrau pass and I’ve been all over the Jungfrau region already. Makes you wonder why they even have two prices for the pass if they never bother to validate the reduced price of the pass.
I have the Jungfrau Unlimited Pass, and I have been asked to show my HFC on a few occasions.
But the pass is sold to resdidents mostly. And you also have the reduction if you previously bought a Ski Pass (which as a resident I can do at a reduced price).
I guess they just assume that if you have an unlimited pass you are a local, and treat you as such. Quite a few of the conductors on here even know me by now, and often don't even ask me to show my pass.
Just because you haven’t been asked for it, doesn’t mean you won’t ever. Having the QR code for your HFC saved on your phone is the simple option to avoid any future issues.
When traveling by train with my Unlimited Summer Jungfrau Pass, I often need to show my Half Fare Card, as I come from elsewhere in the Berner Oberland and use the pass from Interlaken Ost every time.
If you’re primarily using the pass for gondola rides up into the mountains, there’s no need to show anything to anyone. Simply tap the summer pass card on the side panel at the turnstile and it will open.
What about the bus up to Gross Scheidigg from Grindelwald? I’m assuming that’s not covered by the Unlimited?
Gross Scheidigg from Grindelwald
go up 10 posts from your question and read. The last line. Very clear.
When you ask questions and people take the time to help you, it’s appreciated that you actually read the answers. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to help you in multiple posts with this pass where you disregarded my very clear answers to your questions. If you’re not going to actually read the answers or be appreciative of the help, I won’t waste my time answering.

First and foremost there was no ripoff here, all the information you needed was provided, you just did not take the time to read it. And you obviously have not learned the lesson even now after several people have tried to help you.
